After you have completed this worksheet, give copies to your executor and attorney, keep the original with your other important papers, and update it at least every two to three years. If you are married, have your spouse complete a separate guide.

Where to Keep Your Important Documents

Store the following in a fireproof lockbox at home. (Safe-deposit boxes have strict rules about who can have access.)

  1. Your will
  2. A living will
  3. Original powers of attorney
  4. Originals of birth, marriage and death certificates; adoption papers; any divorce decrees
  5. Deeds, titles, mortgage papers and lease contracts
  6. Military records and citizenship papers
  7. Stock and bond certificates
  8. Insurance photos of the contents of your home
  9. Valuable collectibles
